British Values

To ensure that pupils are prepared for life in modern Britain we teach five fundamental British values.

  • Democracy
  • The Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect
  • Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

At Our Lady Queen of Peace, the promotion of ‘British Values’ is central to our Catholic education. British values are implemented throughout our every day lives at school. They are embedded in our curriculum subjects such as R.E. and P.S.H.E. (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education).

School activities such as anti-bullying week and guest speakers for individual classes allow us to focus on respect and tolerance towards each other. All of our teaching staff model British values in their interactions with children as we encourage respect, rights and responsibilities and the importance of school rules within our school community.

At Our Lady Queen of Peace British values are also deeply rooted in our Gospel values and teachings as we teach the importance of living a good life as shown by the example of Jesus and his inclusion for all, which is developed in our Catholic social teaching.

We reinforce British values in the following ways:

Democracy

At Our Lady Queen of Peace children are actively encouraged to use their ‘pupil voice’ in all aspects of school life. Children are involved in writing and agreeing to classroom rules. Our school council representatives are elected at the start of the year and all children have the opportunity to put forward ideas and opinions through them. Our house Captains and Vice-Captains are elected through pupil votes based on a statement of case from individual pupils on why they should be chosen for the role of leadership.

The Rule of Law

Rules and laws are reinforced throughout our school. Children are made aware of school and classroom rules and consequences of not following these rules. Children are taught the need for rules and how these impact the everyday laws which we also follow outside of school. Our children understand that rules keep us safe.

Individual Liberty

At Our Lady Queen of Peace we encourage all children to be unique individuals and develop their self-esteem and confidence in all aspects of our curriculum. Children are taught respect and tolerance through our R.E., P.S.H.E and R.S.H.E (Relationships, Sex and Health Education) curriculums – they permeate all areas of school life.

Mutual Respect

Our school mission statement resonates the mutual respect that we share for our school and wider community. Through our Gospel values, children are taught the worth and uniqueness of every individual.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

At Our Lady Queen of Peace children are taught about other faiths. As a Catholic school we teach children to respect and value our diverse society as promoted in the Gospel values of Jesus.
